Of Squirrels and Atoms

A number of events have occurred that lead to this piece of work. Daft as it may sound, one morning, whilst driving to the studio, I passed a dead squirrel at the side of the road, laying on its back with arms and legs splayed and head turned to one side. It was at that extremely moving moment, when the temporary nature and vulnerability of life – all life, including human, became so achingly clear. We are all just atoms. Later, at the museum in Lews Castle, Stornoway I saw a phrase on one of the walls that encapsulated everything I had been feeling since seeing the squirrel – “What comes with the wind, goes with the rain.” The music and images in the short film are my response to this.
