This is the final result of a project I’ve had knocking around for a few weeks now. I wanted to make a bigger version of the ‘Tin Can Green Man’ model that I made last year, and have considered buying large sheets of metal. However, on revisiting the original models, I decided it would be interesting to make my own sheet of metal from a collection of discarded drinks cans. The cans were glued together in a patchwork and folded as before. The only new element, was the addition of some metal ivy leaves that were found in my shed during a clear-out. The model is about 40cm
Having first attached the Green Man image to a piece of green netting, I wrapped it around a tree in Canklow Woods (ancient woodland) at Boston Castle in Rotherham.
I initially imagined the structures standing in woodland or parkland, being wholly visible, but having tried photographing them in different settings, I much prefer the ‘hidden’ locations, as if they have been there for some time and nature has ‘reclaimed’ them.
“Statistics Manipulate Truths” – large cardboard sculptures placed in a natural setting. The white, geometric, clinical shapes juxtaposed with the unruly, wildness of nature. Nature fights back and will always win… More natural setting to follow.
Continuing the theme of boxes showing letters and words, I have been trying to ‘soften’ up the font to be more appropriate for the word definitions. Words such as ‘joyful’ and ‘gentleness’ need to be less geometric in their design. However, a box with the letters cut out isn’t robust enough so I have decided to mock up a box with the letters ‘carved’ into the faces. This will be developed using wooden blocks and letters standing proud from the background.
Latest project – boxes made using letters spelling out the following words related to wellbeing (from the top) Play, Skip, Leap, Jump, Rest. They need spraying.
